Profitability Consultant
Fellow of CPA Australia with more than 35 years in financial services spanning banking, insurance, and telecommunications. Spent 14 years as Teradata's APJ Practice Partner for Finance and Performance Management, with deep specialisation in customer profitability for banking institutions, including activity-based costing and funds transfer pricing.
Steve is Corvair's Profitability Consultant, focused on customer profitability for banking institutions: activity-based costing, funds transfer pricing, and the multi-dimensional customer profitability methodology that ties them together. He partners with Corvair's advisory and delivery teams on banking engagements where the client needs to understand the true economics of a customer, product, channel, or relationship, and where AI and analytics decisions must reconcile back to the bank's profitability model rather than sit outside it.
His scope spans framing the profitability problem, designing or validating ABC cost allocations and FTP curve design, pressure-testing customer profitability outputs against finance and product economics, and helping institutions connect AI governance and analytics decisions to the management reporting that the CFO, business heads, and the board actually use. He brings hands-on lead-business-consultant experience designing customer and product profitability models at ANZ, UOB, UBL, Siam Commercial Bank, Standard Chartered, DiGi Telecommunications, and Optus.
Steve's career spans more than 35 years across the financial services industry. He started at ING Australia in 1980 and stayed for 16 years across general insurance, life insurance, and banking, including seven years managing the national planning and budgeting process and the build of ING's activity-based costing model. In 1996 he moved into technology, joining AMP where he spent five years on project and programme management and was a key member of the leadership team that implemented a full suite of PeopleSoft financial modules, including Enterprise Performance Management. He also built AMP's activity-based costing model.
From 2002 he led the Project Management practice at BML & Associates, an Australian consulting firm specialising in PeopleSoft implementations, before joining Finance Now Pty Ltd as Chief Operating Officer in 2005. At Finance Now he managed the relationships between a multi-lender personal loan origination platform and its lending panel (which included NAB, CBA, and HSBC) and led new lender implementations covering lending criteria specification, process mapping, system design, and project delivery.
In 2006 Steve joined Teradata as APJ Practice Partner for Finance and Performance Management, a role he held for 14 years until his retirement in January 2021. He led Teradata's F&PM portfolio across Asia Pacific and Japan, focused on EDW-based solutions for the customer finance community, with primary focus areas in multidimensional profitability analytics, GL integration, management reporting, and budgeting and planning. He acted as lead business consultant on customer and product profitability designs at ANZ, UOB, UBL, Siam Commercial Bank, Standard Chartered, DiGi Telecommunications, and Optus, working hands-on with Teradata Value Analyzer (TVA), TM1, and Teradata Data Engine (TDE) on customer-level ledgers, FTP, and ABC cost allocations.
