The gap between AI enthusiasm and AI impact is growing. Most organizations are experimenting with AI. Very few can articulate what is working, what is not, and why. The result is a landscape of scattered experiments: individual productivity tools here, a team workflow there, a stalled initiative blocked by security somewhere else.
This study is designed to map that landscape from the perspective of the people living in it. We are not asking executives what their AI strategy is. We are asking knowledge workers what their AI reality is. The gap between those two things is where the most important findings will emerge.
This study is grounded in Chapter 4 of Proxy.Me (the AI Productivity Trap, which shows that AI makes individuals faster while making organizations slower) and in the deployment context taxonomy from Appendix D (which identifies six distinct contexts in which AI agents operate, each with different governance and coordination requirements).
The three measurement axes (Embedded vs. Autonomous, Individual vs. Team, Predictable vs. Adaptive) capture the structural characteristics that determine whether AI use remains an individual productivity hack or evolves into organizational capability.
